Submission Pt. 2

Ephesians 5:22 "Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord."

Notice 2 things:

1. Husbands belong to their wives and wives belong to their husbands. 1Co 7:4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

When two Christians become "one flesh," they no longer exist to serve themself, but to serve their spouse. It is significant to note that women are not required to submit to all men, only to their husbands. This can cause problems in the workforce, church and world if a distinction is not made here. When a woman agrees to marry a man, she agrees to submit to him, not to every Tom, Dick and Harry.

2. Note the relationship of submission being "as to the Lord."

The only exception for a wife not to submit to her husband is if he is asking her to do something that contradicts the clear teaching of Scripture. Peter says, "We ought to obey God rather than man." Colossians 3:18 "Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord." Submission by a wife to her husband is biblical and right. It is appropriate behavior by anyone seeking to obey the Lord.
