Submission Pt. 1

With a desire to speak to what I believe one of the primary assaults on the church, I am going to publish a series of posts on "The Family." Because we are going through Colossians 3 in our Friday night bible study, and because the first issue dealt with in verse 18 is the role of women, I will begin there. Ultimately, the issue is not what pastor Joe says, and certainly we should never look at our culture and what is taught on the Cosby Show or anything else as authoritative over the Bible. What does the Bible say, what does it mean, and how can we apply it to our lives?

Text: Ephesians 5:21-6:4, Collossians 3:18-4:1

Point #1 is the Matter of Submission

Ephesians 5:21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
Christians are a group of people that submit to one another. All Christians reverence God supremely and in no way are any group of Christians "Better" than any other group of Christians. There is no Jew or Gentile, Male or Female in God's eyes as relates to their postion in Christ before God. The difference comes in their roles as defined by Scripture.

The Scriptures speak of the church as being a body. All parts of the body are necessary for the functioning of life but there are different roles that each part of the body carries out. Not to the exclusion of other parts but so that the body may function as it was designed to function. In the case of the church, that it may function for God's glory alone. Any part of the body that becomes, "too big for its britches." assaults the glory, belonging only to God.

The pattern as always, is modeled for us by the Lord Jesus Christ. John 13:12-14 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? (13) You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. (14) If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
