One curse that I see in politics is the "finger in the wind" decision making policy. Find out what the majority of the people want and then vote to please them. I don’t remember where I first heard it but I agree with the statement that a republic functions as we people realize that for various reasons, the majority is not well informed. We do not know what is best for us on every issue so we elect people from amongst us who are smarter than us. These men hold certain standards and convictions that they make known during their campaign. If after a few years we see that they have violated the principles that they promised to uphold, very simply, we do not re-elect them and may even impeach them.
When politicians make decisions based on the whims of the populace in spite of common sense, the Constitution, and truth or simply what they know in their heart to be wrong, it leads to disaster and to what we have today in our governments. Leaders need to make decisions based upon Principle, not favor, their own welfare, and re-election.

The perfect illustration from the Bible comes from Pontus Pilate.
Mark 15:15 So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.

One other biblical example and I will quit. Moses is up on the mount getting the Law from God. The people begin to complain so Aaron builds them the golden calf to worship. Moses comes down and asks why he has brought 'so great a sin' upon the people? His response, "Do not let the anger of my lord become hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil."

One duty of elected officials and leaders is to restrain the people. If they fail to do so, it is the duty of the people to restrain them by removing them from office.

Excellent observations! We need to think clearly about these things and evaluate issues and candidates according to Biblical standards, not what is most expedient and pragmatic for us. May we be faithful to do our part as God's people placed in this time & place for His glory! I thank the Lord for bringing you here and for His knitting together a network of like-minded brethren in our area lately to stand together and encourage one another in the precious truths of His sovereignty and His free grace upoon sinners like us. As you are preparing to speak on next Saturday, "TO GOD ALONE BE THE GLORY."

Thank you pastor Jeff. I am excited about our fellowship as well. Turning the world upside down requires some help. Jesus said it is done by the truth and all those who are of the truth will hear His voice.
Can't wait to see you on the 23rd.
Thanks for writing this.
